Sails Meeting

Unfortunately, as a class, the 110s don’t have the same numbers as say the E22s, J24s, or Lightning’s, but we are still looking for some personal attention and quality sails. Having our choice of local lofts including North, UK, Hood, Quantum, and Jasper & Bailey we approached Quantum Newport this past winter to see what they could come up with for a suit of 110 sails. So far we’ve had 4 meetings on design, longevity, materials, and finish. Quantum designed us a main and a jib using UK and Doyle/Curtis sails as a starting point. Then they put the sails together using some old cloth they had lying around so we all could make comments on the shape. The sails were stuck together and the battens were taped on. Jeff Adam pulled his boat out of his new garage-ma-hal and onto his lawn for the afternoon and the whole design team came down for a look. I know it looks like a State Highway job with 5 guys standing around and no one working but let me tell you a lot got accomplished. This is the M1 version of the new mainsail rule. It’s going back in for some tweaking here and there after checking the sail in some more breeze this past Sunday. You heard me right, Bill took more time out of his weekend to get another look at the main. What’s your sailmaker done for you lately?
